Is tDCS safe?
Yes, for healthy adults at standard settings, tDCS is considered one of the safest forms of brain stimulation. Can tDCS cause seizures?
The risk in healthy, screened adults is effectively negligible. Across the reviewed literature, only one seizure was ever reported, in a person who already had epilepsy. This is precisely why epilepsy is a standard screening question before using any tDCS device.
Does tDCS hurt?
No, most people feel only a mild tingling or itching, not pain. Any genuinely painful sensation is a signal that something is wrong, usually an electrode or skin issue, and the right response is to stop the session rather than push through.
Is tDCS safe for daily, long-term use?
The evidence for repeated sessions is reassuring, as the landmark safety data cover thousands of repeated sessions with no serious events. Most long-term data come from defined treatment courses of 10 to 20 sessions, so for daily wellness use, staying within the conventional dose (0.5 to 2 mA) and duration (around 20 to 30 minutes) is what keeps you inside the studied safety range.
Is tDCS addictive?
No, tDCS is not addictive. It does not act on the brain's reward pathways the way addictive substances do, and there is no established dependence syndrome associated with it.

Is it safe to combine tDCS with caffeine, alcohol, or medication?
Caffeine is generally fine, but alcohol and significant sleep deprivation are excluded in many research protocols before a session.
