FREQUENTLY ASKED
Questions
Is Sychedelic FDA approved?
No. Sychedelic is not FDA-approved or FDA-cleared. It is a consumer wellness device, and the FDA does not approve any tDCS product for focus or cognitive enhancement. The brand instead cites Indian CDSCO licensing and IEC 60601-1-2 EMC certification.
Is any tDCS device FDA approved?
Yes, but only one, and only for depression. In December 2025 the FDA approved the Flow Neuroscience FL-100 tDCS device for moderate-to-severe major depressive disorder, by prescription. No tDCS device is FDA approved for focus, attention, or productivity.
What does "CDSCO approved" mean?
It means a device holds the relevant licence to be made, imported, or sold in India under the Medical Devices Rules, 2017, administered by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation. Higher-risk devices such as neurostimulators are licensed centrally by CDSCO.
Is CDSCO the same as the FDA?
No. CDSCO is India's national regulator and plays a role similar to the FDA, but the two are separate bodies with different standards and scopes. A CDSCO licence does not mean a device is FDA-approved, and the reverse is also true.
What does IEC 60601-1-2 certification mean?
IEC 60601-1-2 certifies electromagnetic compatibility for medical electrical equipment. It confirms the device neither causes nor is unduly disrupted by electromagnetic interference. It does not certify that the therapy works.
Does IEC 60601-1-2 mean a device is safe and effective?
No. It addresses electromagnetic compatibility only. Overall basic safety is covered by the parent standard IEC 60601-1, and stimulator-specific safety by IEC 60601-2-10. Effectiveness is not addressed by any of these standards.
Is tDCS safe?
At conventional intensities of 4 mA or less and durations of 40 minutes or less, the published evidence shows a strong safety profile, with no serious adverse effects reported across more than 33,200 sessions (Bikson et al., 2016, PMID 27372845). Minor side effects such as tingling, itching, redness, and mild headache are common.
Does tDCS have side effects?
Yes, usually mild and temporary. The most common are skin tingling or itching under the electrodes, brief redness, a prickling sensation, headache, and fatigue. Good electrode preparation reduces them. Serious adverse effects have not been reported under conventional protocols.
Is tDCS proven to improve focus?
Not definitively. tDCS is studied across many uses and its safety data is reassuring, but whether it reliably improves focus in healthy people remains an active area of research and debate. Treat strong "guaranteed focus" claims with caution, from any brand.
Do I need a prescription to use Sychedelic?
As a consumer wellness device, Sychedelic is sold directly to buyers without a prescription. By contrast, the FDA-approved tDCS depression device is prescription-only, because it is regulated as a medical treatment for a diagnosed condition.
Can a product be sold legally without FDA approval?
Yes. The FDA approves or clears only products marketed as medical devices for medical claims. Consumer wellness products that make no disease claims are sold lawfully without FDA approval, in the US and abroad, although that also means no regulator has independently vetted their benefit claims.
How do I verify a neurostimulation device's certifications?
Ask for specifics. Request the CDSCO licence number and device class, confirm the standard is written correctly as IEC 60601-1-2, and check that any clinical figures cite their original source. Reputable manufacturers can document the claims behind their badges.
